Leaving a minimal mark on the environment has been at the core of what we do since the beginning. After all, gorgeous beauty products don't exactly matter without a planet to survive on. But as CLOVE + HALLOW has grown and evolved, so too have our sustainability practices. Keep reading to learn all about what we've been up to.
WE'RE NET PLASTIC NEUTRAL.
You read that right. Through rePurpose Global, we calculate our plastic footprint and fund the removal of an equal amount of plastic from landfills. Even better, the plastic that's removed is low-value, so it's less likely than other plastics to be removed and re-used.
WE PRIORITIZE PCR + OTHER SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS.
Line + Define Liquid Eyeliner is the first product in our transition to 100% post-consumer recycled plastic components, and we'll be phasing in more and more products utilizing zero virgin plastic. Other sustainable materials we're proud to use:
Recyclable outer packaging
Recyclable shadow palettes (we didn't include a mirror in our Sunrise Pressed Pigment Palette, because doing so causes a palette to become unrecyclable.)
Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood, which promotes responsible and sustainable management of the world's forests
WE OFFER REFILLABLE OPTIONS.
When we use plastic, we make it a cinch—and more affordable—to pop in a refill rather than buy an entirely new, virgin plastic-based product. Example: When you hit pan on your Pressed Mineral Foundation, take out the pan and recycle it, then replace it with a new one.
WE OFFER CARBON-NEUTRAL SHIPPING.
Sustainable beauty products are great, but brands do the earth a disservice when they don't consider the impact of shipping and transporting those products, too. That's why we partner with Cloverly to give our customers the option to offset the effects of their shipment for a very small fee (literally nickels and dimes). Meanwhile, we're working on solutions to one day make every shipment from CLOVE + HALLOW carbon-neutral.
WE CREATE MINIMALIST FORMULAS.
Products with mile-long ingredient lists? Yeah, there are environmental repercussions for that, too—just think of all the waste created thanks to the harvesting and production of each and every ingredient. We've always created products in accordance with our Clean15 philosophy, meaning each product has just 15 good-for-you ingredients, max. This is good for your skin, your brain (because who wants to decipher 50 ingredients on an ingredient list?), and the planet.
WE'RE VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE.
By refusing to use animal byproducts in our formulas, we're not just taking a stand for our furry friends. Studies have shown that combined animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, compared to just 13% attributed to transportation. (Let that sink in!) We're a vegan and PETA-certified cruelty-free company because it's the right thing to do for the environment, too.
WE HELP CLIMATE PROTESTORS.
If you haven't checked out our Advocacy page yet, we highly recommend it. There, among other resources, you'll find effective tips for protesting—and that includes for climate change and justice.
