B.A.B.E. OF THE MONTH: ORGANICALLY BECCA
Every month, we're spotlighting a Badass Beauty Expert (B.A.B.E.) and picking their brain on all things beauty, wellness, and channeling your inner baddie. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion—and inspire you to step out of your makeup and skincare comfort zones.
Define yourself in three words.
Empathetic. Tolerant. Open-minded.
What are three things you can't live without? (Beauty products can be included, but they don't have to be!)
Coffee is obviously my número uno! I don't remember the last time I went a day without it (nor do I want to). It makes me a better human being.
Manuka honey is another one; not only is it a tasty and immune-boosting treat, but it is AMAZING for skincare and I use it as a face mask at least weekly (it's naturally antibacterial and anti-microbial).
Is it weird to say my menstrual cup? Because it makes a HUGE difference for me during that time of the month and I can't imagine not having it.
What prompted you to make the switch to safe makeup brands? I was struggling with acne and hormonal imbalances, and nothing was helping. So I started digging and doing research about how to start healing from within holistically. I cared about the ingredients in my food, so why not products too? It also opened my eyes to some of the nasty ingredients in conventional cosmetics. I couldn't believe some of the stuff that's allowed in makeup, yikes! I started doing an overhaul of my products and what I was applying to my skin. I'm never looking back because it's helped tremendously!
What are your safe makeup and skincare favorites? Well, this is a loaded question and I could probably give you a million answers! Any of the CLOVE + HALLOW lip products, especially the Lip Velvets. The Plume Nourish & Define brow products are amazing. Blissoma's Photonic Light Shifting Solution SPF 25 Sunscreen + Moisturizer is lovely. Oh, and of course, manuka honey!
What advice would you give for finding safe cosmetics?
Take it slow and don't try to be perfect or live up to someone else's standards. It should be a fun process. If you're just doing it because someone else shamed you into it, that's not going to be sustainable long-term for you. You should be empowered and excited about the switch! I also like to remind people that it took me about two years to fully replace all of my products. Once something runs out, replace it with something cleaner! It's much more affordable to do it that way, too. Also, be skeptical! There is a lot of greenwashing out there so it can be easy to fall for sneaky marketing and products that claim to be clean, yet aren't.
What do you think makes someone a badass? Being unapologetically themselves! I always admire brave and bold people and it pushes me to do the same. (I'm a shy introvert and Enneagram Type 9 [Peacemaker] so it's not always easy for me!) It's so admirable when people don't just do what everyone else is doing and instead forge their own path, regardless of what others think. Also, being a nice person. It sounds simple but we sure need more of it these days!
How did you find your inner badass? Um, I think sometimes I'm still looking? Haha! But seriously, I think it has just come with age and taking risks. A couple of years ago, I quit my corporate job to run my blog and do what I truly love. Taking leaps like that really pushes you out of your comfort zone and forces you to focus on what really matters and find what fuels your passion. It also helps you gain the confidence to be yourself!
What's the last song you listened to?
"You Got Me All Wrong" by Dios (Malos). I've been on an O.C. binge lately and the soundtrack is still SO good!
Quick! You have five minutes to get ready to go out. What do you do with your makeup?
Just the basics! Probably a quick layer of foundation (or sometimes just concealer) and then set with a powder because I have combo skin. I always have to make sure my brows are at least brushed into place, but probably would use a brow gel or pencil too. Then finish with mascara and a pop of color on my lips!
