ESSENTIAL MAKEUP TIPS FOR DEEP SKIN TONES

People come in all shapes, sizes, and skin tones—something we spend a great deal of time thinking about at CLOVE + HALLOW. We know makeup that's supposedly "one-size-fits-all" does a disservice to women of color, but unfortunately, many beauty gurus and cosmetics companies aren't quite there yet.

Our mission is to give every skin tone equal care and attention. Here, we've curated pro makeup tips specifically suited for all the beauties out there with a deep skin tone.

Sunscreen First!

Makeup can only do so much, so it's important to find a great skincare routine. For dark-skinned beauties, including daily SPF 30 or higher in your morning skincare routine is extra important due to an increased likelihood of hyperpigmentation—A.K.A. those pesky dark marks that linger from acne, ingrown hairs, etc. Sunlight makes dark marks last longer, so make sure to use a sunscreen to lessen the intensity and duration of any scarring.

Rock Matte Lips

We aren’t saying a little bit of gloss isn’t allowed in your life, but no one can rock a rich, velvety, matte lippie like someone with a deep skin tone. For a daytime look, stick to simple nudes in the chocolate or mauve variety, like our Lip Velvet in Sugarbear or Uptown. When it’s time to go out at night, there’s no better choice than bold reds and deep purples. (Reach for our Lip Crème in Psych.) Don’t forget to exfoliate before application!

Understand Your Shades

You know that everyone’s skin is different, but did you know there are shades within your shade? It’s important to understand all of the undertones and variations that make up your face. When choosing a foundation, always start with the center of your face—which will be slightly lighter—then follow the shadows of your face with a darker shade. This way, you're following the natural contour of your face and adhering to all the diverse shades within it. Selecting the right shades for each area requires paying attention to your undertones (typically golden, olive, or red) to avoid chalky or mismatched face makeup. You can learn more about determining your undertone here.

Make Your Eyes Pop

Apply highlighter or a shimmery eyeshadow shade to your brow bone, the apples of your cheeks, your chin, and the center of your forehead to make your eyes appear larger. If you aren’t into glimmer and shimmer, there are many highlighters on the market that give a more natural, dewy shine. The contrast against dark skin makes any look extra polished.

Don’t Forget Blush

Even well-seasoned makeup lovers sometimes forget to apply blush, but it's really the finishing touch of color every face needs. On deeper skin tones, blush is even more important, since your natural flush doesn’t show through as overtly. Warmer colors will compliment deep skin tones best, so find a bronze, coral, deep peach, or wine red and pop it onto the apples of your cheeks. We love to use our Lip Crème as the perfect blendable, creamy blush.
