COMING CLEAN WITH JACLYN HOUSTON
Coming Clean is a monthly series where we interview people about their relationship with clean beauty - the good, bad, and ugly. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion, but if you only take away one thing, it should be this: there is no right or wrong way - there is only your way.
Jaclyn is a green beauty blogger and expert. Check out our interview with her as part of CLOVE + HALLOW's monthly Coming Clean series.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO USING CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
My brother actually pointed out that I ate healthy, organic food and worked out, but I was still putting all these toxic products on my face and body. That really got me thinking—so I did research and started following clean beauty bloggers. I hadn't made the connection that what we put on our body and face actually goes into our bloodstream.
"I HADN'T MADE THE CONNECTION THAT WHAT WE PUT ON OUR BODY AND FACE ACTUALLY GOES INTO OUR BLOODSTREAM."
WHICH BEAUTY PRODUCT DID YOU SWAP FIRST?
I'm sort of an all or nothing person, so I swapped out all of my products right away! I'd suggest starting with foundation and body lotions, since they cover most of your body.
WAS BEAUTY THE FIRST THING YOU SWITCHED WHEN MOVING TO A CLEANER LIFESTYLE?
I had already been living a pretty healthy lifestyle and beauty was actually one of the last things I switched!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CLEAN BEAUTY STAPLES?
I can't live without my Honest Beauty Mascara, EcoBrow and True Botanicals Vitamin C Booster Powder. CLOVE + HALLOW's Liquid Skin Tint is my everyday go-to. It has perfect medium coverage, feels so lightweight on my skin, and even holds up through the New York summer humidity!
WHAT DOES YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
My skincare routine is always changing because I'm constantly trying out new products. I will say that I always have a cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, and moisturizer or facial oil. I also try to use a gua sha tool every night, but that doesn't always happen.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO SEE IN THE FUTURE FROM CLEAN BEAUTY?
I can't wait until you can find clean beauty in all stores, so it's easier for everyone to access. I also can't wait to see more color ranges and more fun products: bright colors, glitters, et cetera.
"START WITH PRODUCTS THAT YOU USE EVERY SINGLE DAY."
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO TRANSITION TO CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
I would say don't get overwhelmed, and start with products that you use every single day. You don't have to throw out everything at once like I did! Good resources are Environmental Working Group's website for looking up ingredients and the Think Dirty app so you can see which products are the most toxic. Shopping at stores like Credo Beauty and The Detox Market make things easy, too—everything there is clean.
