Coming Clean is a monthly series where we interview people about their relationship with clean beauty - the good, bad and ugly. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion, but if you only take away one thing, it should be this: there is no right or wrong way - there is only your way.
Suzi is a podcaster and natural and clean living blogger. Check out our interview with her as part of CLOVE + HALLOW's monthly Coming Clean series.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO USING CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
I had read a book called No More Dirty Looks that talks about all the toxins in our beauty products. It really hit home since I'm a cosmetologist and esthetician. I knew I didn't want to be exposing people to harmful products and I didn't want to be exposing myself, either.
WHICH BEAUTY PRODUCT DID YOU SWAP FIRST?
It was my foundation. I remember at the time, 8 years ago, there weren't many options for safer and cleaner products. One of the few brands just coming out was RMS Beauty. I ended up getting their Un Cover Up. I was so excited when I got it in the mail! It felt like a little treasure.
"MY BROTHER IS A NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN AND HE REALLY HAD HELPED ME TRANSITION TO A CLEAN EATING LIFESTYLE."
WAS BEAUTY THE FIRST THING YOU SWITCHED WHEN MOVING TO A CLEANER LIFESTYLE?
No, thankfully I had already been eating clean. My brother is a naturopathic physician and he really had helped me transition to a clean eating lifestyle. I had learned a ton from him about food and how important it was. He was the one that really got me thinking about the products I was using as he had learned more in his practice about the negative effects of conventional beauty products.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CLEAN BEAUTY STAPLES?
Ohh this is hard! So many good ones, especially now. I really love True Botanical's Antioxidant Booster and Repair Serum for feeding the skin antioxidants and maintaining overall youthfulness. I also am a huge fan of Leahlani Mermaid Mask, gives my skin an overall glow, while nourishing it. It was the first green beauty mask I could notice an immediate difference upon using. Honest Beauty Mascara is amazing, best natural beauty mascara I've found! Love Clove + Hallow's Concealer - it covers redness and blemishes but it's not too heavy. Love Innersense Beauty Hair products! They really perform so well. Love their "I create Mousse" and "Whipped Cream" Texturizers.
WHAT DOES YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
It looks somewhat similar in the morning and at night, except at night I do add in some extra steps. I always cleanse my skin, tone, apply a serum, an oil, eye cream, and then sometimes a balm or cream on top if I need extra moisture. In the morning, I skip the serum usually and just cleanse, tone, and add an oil or daily moisturizer. I'm constantly trying new products so it can vary a little depending on what I'm trying. Also, I exfoliate twice a week and mask twice to three times a week depending on the season.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO SEE IN THE FUTURE FROM CLEAN BEAUTY?
I'm excited to see standards being raised. As a whole, I believe the clean beauty movement is just getting started and hopefully our voices are being heard in D.C. where laws can be changed and stricter standards can be implemented. There needs to be more accountability in general.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO TRANSITION TO CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
I would say to just start with one product at a time. It doesn't have to be a huge leap. I always tell people when you run out of one product, swap it out for a cleaner one. Not only is this less stressful, but it also is so much easier on the budget!
