COMING CLEAN WITH CHANTEL RODRIGUEZ
Coming Clean is a monthly series where we interview people about their relationship with clean beauty - the good, bad, and ugly. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion, but if you only take away one thing, it should be this: there is no right or wrong way - there is only your way.
Chantel is a green beauty and lifestyle expert and influencer. (She's also known for her jaw-dropping lip art!) Check out our interview with her as part of CLOVE + HALLOW's monthly Coming Clean series.
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO MAKE THE SWITCH TO USING CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
My interest in using cleaner beauty products began with the pregnancy of my son. As a new mom, I was determined to make better, more informed decisions to ensure I was giving him the best start in life. It was a bit of a challenge at first but I learned that if your “why” is great enough, you’ll stick to it.
"IF YOUR 'WHY' IS GREAT ENOUGH, YOU’LL STICK TO IT."
WHICH BEAUTY PRODUCT DID YOU SWAP FIRST?
I started with foundation first. I figured because this was something I use on my face almost every day, I should start there. I started by exploring all the ones Whole Foods had to offer, which was a pretty small selection back then. I played around with a few different brands but I remember Gabriel Cosmetics being my first clean favorite.
WAS BEAUTY THE FIRST THING YOU SWITCHED WHEN MOVING TO A CLEANER LIFESTYLE?
The first thing was actually food! I began learning about chemicals in food and started transitioning to healthier eating. Once I felt good about where I was with my diet, I moved on to cosmetics and other products. I think it’s important to attack one thing at a time to make your transition realistic and sustainable.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CLEAN BEAUTY STAPLES?
Oh man, this is hard! If we’re talking skincare, then some of my favorites are the Aleavia Prebiotic wash as a cleanser, WabiSabi Botanicals The Giver for makeup removal, and OSEA Malibu’s Essential Corrective Complex for spot treating. (It’s BOMB.) For makeup, CLOVE + HALLOW Conceal + Correct, W3LL PEOPLE Realist Setting Powder and Zuzu Luxe Liquid Eyeliner are an absolute must for me.
WHAT DOES YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE LOOK LIKE?
This changes pretty frequently but I’m more of a "spray your face in the A.M. and do all the skincare at night" kind of gal. If I’m wearing lots of makeup I’ll usually double cleanse with the WabiSabi oil and follow up with Aleavia’s wash. After that, I always use a toner, moisturizer, facial serum and eye cream.
"I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO ATTACK ONE THING AT A TIME TO MAKE YOUR TRANSITION REALISTIC AND SUSTAINABLE."
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO SEE IN THE FUTURE FROM CLEAN BEAUTY?
I’m most excited to see it become more mainstream and easily accessible! When I first started years ago, the tiny Whole Foods section was all we had to work with. Now it’s becoming so different with Target and Sephora jumping on board. I can’t wait until there are clean options everywhere we shop!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO TRANSITION TO CLEANER BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
Start small. Don’t feel like you need to change everything overnight. Also, never hesitate to reach out to me if you need some guidance! I truly enjoy helping others become more conscious consumers.
