B.A.B.E. OF THE MONTH: SUNNY SUBRAMANIAN
Updated: Apr 29
Every month, we're spotlighting a Badass Beauty Expert (B.A.B.E.) and picking their brain on all things beauty, wellness, and channeling your inner baddie. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion—and inspire you to step out of your makeup and skincare comfort zones.
Sunny is a vegan lifestyle blogger and author of The Compassionate Chick's Guide to DIY Beauty.
Define yourself in three words. Compassionate, open-minded, inquisitive.
What are three things you can't live without? (Beauty products can be included, but they don't have to be!) Cuddles, vegan snacks, and tinted lip balm.
What prompted you to make the switch to safe makeup brands? There's a lot of overlap among vegan and clean beauty products, so it's always been on my radar, but things ultimately pivoted for me after I got pregnant with my first baby. I became hyper-aware of toxic ingredients throughout my house, from household cleaners to beauty products.
What are your safe makeup and skincare favorites? I use Dr. Bronner's for most of my DIY beauty and home products. I love how versatile it is! I also love slathering my skin in pure beauty oils, especially before bed, including argan, grapeseed, rosehip seed, hemp, and jojoba. They're great for removing makeup, cleansing, and moisturizing.
What advice would you give for finding safe cosmetics? Make the switch at a comfortable pace. Don't feel pressured to trash all of your products at once and start from scratch. Make a decision to be more conscious about ingredients moving forward and start to phase out any questionable products in your current lineup. When reading product labels, try to steer clear of ingredients that look complicated and hard to pronounce. Also, I recommend checking ingredients and specific products in EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. It'll give you a better sense of what is and isn't safe for your body and explain why.
What do you think makes someone a badass? To me, a badass is someone who exudes confidence, speaks the truth, and isn't afraid to stand for something.
How did you find your inner badass? I'm realizing as I grow older, I'm less and less concerned about people's opinions and perceptions of me and I'm becoming more comfortable in my own skin. I try to lead with my heart, keep an open mind, and not be so attached to outcomes I don't have control over.
What's the last song you listened to? New Love Cassette by Angel Olsen.
Quick! You have five minutes to get ready to go out. What do you do with your makeup? I'll use an all-over face powder, a tiny bit of bronzer on the cheekbones, mascara, and a shimmery, pink lip gloss.
