B.A.B.E. OF THE MONTH: KY WASHINGTON
Updated: Oct 1, 2020
Every month, we're spotlighting a Badass Beauty Expert (B.A.B.E.) and picking their brain on all things beauty, wellness, and channeling your inner baddie. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion—and inspire you to step out of your makeup and skincare comfort zones.
Ky is a makeup artist and aromatherapist in Washington, D.C., and the co-founder of Clean Beauty Artists.
Define yourself in three words.
Loving, Kind, Spicy.
What are three things you can't live without? (Beauty products can be included, but they don't have to be!)
Organic tea, crystals, and a bold lip.
What prompted you to make the switch to safe makeup brands? I switched to cleaner products because of a hormone imbalance that caused me huge fertility issues. I cleaned up my lifestyle to get healthy and clean beauty was a huge part of that. I’m a makeup artist by trade and honestly I can think of few things I love more than makeup and I didn’t want to give that up.
What are your safe makeup and skincare favorites? Clean beauty excels at things that nourish and make you glow! I am never without a beautiful face oil, a cream or liquid highlight, and a pretty blush.
What advice would you give for finding safe cosmetics?
Do it! The industry has so many gems now. Your skin is your largest organ and you can help to reduce its toxic load. I always tell people starting out to just transition slowly. Run out of moisturizer? Replace it with a clean one. I also used to keep a note in my planner with a little shopping list of clean beauty items I would like to swap out for my traditional items.
What do you think makes someone a badass? Being afraid and doing it anyway. All of the big moments in my life happened this way.
How did you find your inner badass? Honestly? School of hard knocks. You go through things for a reason. Your whole life is purposeful. There is a learning experience and opportunity to grow, even in pain or bad situations. I now thank those situations for what they gave me and allow myself to transform.
What's the last song you listened to?
Mood, or anything from Beyoncé’s Black is King Album.
Quick! You have five minutes to get ready to go out. What do you do with your makeup?
Throw on CLOVE + HALLOW Liquid Skin Tint. (That shit is magical.) Fill in my eyebrows, throw on bronzer and a bright pink lip.
