B.A.B.E. OF THE MONTH: ERIN MULLINS SANDERSON

Every month, we're spotlighting a Badass Beauty Expert (B.A.B.E.) and picking their brain on all things beauty, wellness, and channeling your inner baddie. We hope these interviews will serve as a platform for raw and vulnerable discussion—and inspire you to step out of your makeup and skincare comfort zones.

Erin is a beauty expert and influencer, musician, and founder of non-toxic skincare line SKIN.

Define yourself in three words. Passionate. Loyal. Visionary.

What are three things you can't live without? (Beauty products can be included, but they don't have to be!) 1. Chapstick 2. Razor (I’m a very hairy girl) 3. My bible

What prompted you to make the switch to safe makeup brands? In 2013 I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism.  I refused to be sick, so I dedicated myself to researching the disease with the intention of reversing the diagnosis… which I did.  But what I found in my research is that the Hypothyroid diagnosis doesn’t just “happen,” there is always a trigger. One of those triggers is toxin overload.  Therefore, my literal LIFE depended on me cleaning up everything I put on and in my body. From shaving cream to eyeliner, I made the switch to clean beauty.

What are your safe makeup and skincare favorites? Well obviously my skincare line SKIN tops the list!  As well as the CLOVE + HALLOW Lip Glaze! I’m not just saying that, C+H lip color really IS the only lipstick I wear.  And the truth is, when you have great skin, you can get away with little else but a pop of great color on the lips! In addition to those products, I love Innersense hair care and Juice Beauty concealer… both are really great.

What advice would you give for finding safe cosmetics? Replace the products you use the most, first!  The products you put on your skin every single day are really the most important, because whatever is in them is going to get absorbed into your body.  Using a crappy toxic lipstick one night of the year for Halloween isn’t going to kill you… but using one every day might.

What do you think makes someone a badass? Somebody who can pick themselves back up every time they get knocked down, wipe the dust off their leather pants, and get back at it without wallowing in self-pity. That’s a badass. Saying you’re a badass and BEING a badass are two totally different things. Saying you're a badass is as easy—BEING a badass is so hard.  It's work. Actually, it's THE work. I can’t stand it when people act entitled to an easy life.  The truth is, life is like walking into Thunderdome… but a badass babe can rule Thunderdome.

How did you find your inner badass? Pick yourself back up enough times, you get better at it.  Eventually you realize you’re one tough mother. Eventually you realize how powerful you are. And then one day you decide that no matter how many hits you take, you’re not quitting. That’s it. That’s the day. That’s the day you find your inner badass. No one can touch you then.

What's the last song you listened to? Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac.  Actually, listening to it right now.

Quick! You have five minutes to get ready to go out. What do you do with your makeup? Fill in my brows. Curl my lashes and slap on some mascara. Put a little concealer under my eyes and around my nose where I get redness. Put a little highlighter on my cheeks and down my nose. Pop on some C+H Lip Glaze in Candied Hearts and I’m good to go!
